Basic Mediation Training aims to provide the foundational skills of conflict resolution especially inter-personal conflict cases. During eight days (48 hours) long training, participants develop understanding on language of neutrality, communication and negotiation skills, appreciative inquiry and art of questioning, basic rules of negotiation, role of mediators, national laws relating to mediation along with different steps in the mediation process. The basic training course is highly interactive and participatory as each theoretical topic is followed by role play with necessary feedback to the participants for further improvements. Role play is the most important part of mediation training which displays the participants' knowledge and skills.
Participants for basic training are selected through local level judiciary committee meeting in the presence of ward chairperson and ward representatives. Thus selected participants receive eight days long basic training based on the training manual which is approved by the Mediation Council. After accomplishment of basic mediation training, the participants register report along with training certificate for their listing as a mediator in their respective judicial committee. Then village assembly publicly announces the finalized list of mediators. The conflicts are referred to mediation center through judicial committee afterwards facilitated by the mediator to resolve the conflict.
Basic mediation training is organized in coordination with local government authorities and different implementing partners. Total 4745 mediators are produced through 171 basic mediation trainings conducted in program districts. Thus produced mediators are working in the resolution of community-level conflicts which directly contributes to generating peaceful society.
